MONCA
Project Overview
The Museum of Northern California Art (MONCA) renovation transformed a historic building into a modern cultural destination while preserving the architectural character that makes the structure unique. Originally constructed more than a century ago, the building was carefully adapted to serve as a contemporary museum and community gathering space.
The project included the construction of gallery spaces, restrooms, a gift shop, reception areas, and public gathering spaces, along with improvements to the building entrance and visitor experience. Special attention was given to maintaining historic architectural details while integrating modern building systems and museum functionality.
Today, the facility serves as a cornerstone of Chico's arts community, providing a welcoming environment for exhibitions, events, education, and cultural engagement.
Challenge
Renovating a century-old structure required extensive lead and asbestos abatement, careful preservation of historic architectural features, and integration of modern systems without compromising the building's historic character. Matching existing finishes and architectural details demanded a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
